I am SO excited for October!
It's my busy season with the leaves changing and I love it! This year I am not playing 'beat the clock' and hoping I could get everything done before baby arrived so that's a huge relief.
I have a NEW outdoor location I am SO excited to use! Who wants to go here?
I do 4 sessions every Saturday and 4 sessions every Sunday in October. It's a crazy schedule as I also book during the week for families who are available but it's just one month, right?
October is to Certified Professional Photographers as April is to Tax Professionals!
I start my day at my computer sipping coffee and reading emails. I get and and all news from Facebook. I never watch or read the news.
I miss the Today Show sometimes but find myself a happier person for not being inundated with all the awfulness of the world every morning.
It's been this was for about 2 1/2 years now. I remember a big news event with a theater shooting and just crying about it as I held Arianna. Shortly after there was the Boston Marathon incident. I personally knew someone running so I was so afraid. That was what sealed the deal for me though. I just can't let media control my emotions and start my day off poorly over something that has little impact on my own life.
I choose happiness. This also means I am choosing to be ignorant of the things happening in our world. It's a trade I am willing to take.
Tell me, do you choose not to watch or read the news like me? How does it impact your day and mood?
If you do watch and read the news, why do you? Do you feel it brings negativity to your life?
Growing up my family was not involved in volunteer work. My parents were in Jaycees for a while when I was very young but I never knew what it really was.
When I was introduced to the concept of volunteering in my early 20's I was confused. You mean people work for free? What?
Ever since then it is like I am trying to make up for lost time. I volunteer my time and talents at charity events and try to donate 120 gift certificates a year to fundraising efforts in the Peoria/Pekin area and surrounding communities.
The volunteer work closest to my heart is the work I do for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (NILMDTS)
Here is more information from the organization:
NILMDTS provides remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture. NILMDTS trains, educates, and mobilizes professional quality photographers to provide beautiful heirloom portraits to families facing the untimely death of an infant. We believe these images serve as an important step in the family’s healing process by honoring the child’s legacy. History Maddux Achilles Haggard was born on Feb. 4, 2005, with a condition called myotubular myopathy that prevented him from breathing, swallowing or moving on his own. On the sixth day of his young life, his parents had to make the excruciating decision to take him off life support. But before they did, they called Littleton, Colorado photographer Sandy Puc' to take black and white portraits of them cradling their son. Puc' photographed the couple with Maddux at the hospital before he was removed from life support and after — when he was free from the tubes and the wires that had sustained him. “That night was the worst night of my life. But when I look at the images, that’s not what I’m reminded of. I’m reminded of the beauty and blessings he brought,” Cheryl Haggard (Maddux's mom) said. Those tender photographs documenting Maddux’s eternal connection with his parents inspired Cheryl Haggard and Sandy Puc' to found a nonprofit organization that has provided thousands of families of babies who are stillborn or are at risk of dying as newborns with free professional portraits with their baby. Sandy and Cheryl founded the organization in April 2005 and called it Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (NILMDTS) after the children’s bedtime prayer. Reach Since NILMDTS was founded in 2005, over 11,000 volunteer photographers have been part of the network. NILMDTS reaches every state in the United States and has been present in 40 countries worldwide.
Since I became a volunteer and then the Area Coordinator in 2006 I have personally photographed and/or retouched 45 sessions.
Our local organization is currently looking for volunteers. Photographers as well as non-photographers can help and are encouraged to contact me for more information!
I often am asked how I got everyone looking so perfect for their portrait. I wanted to give you a good visual of all the things that go into our beautiful wall art.
After your session I go through and personally narrow it down to the best of the best. No need for you to try to figure out from 2 similar poses which expression you prefer on little Billy. And look, your husband's eyes are closed on the one you love of little Amy. I will be sure every image you see looks amazing. I go through all the images in each series and use the best expression of each person to make one great image!
Once I have selected the best one I go to work perfecting every detail. Color correction, exposure tweaking, extra saturation, softening, blending and smoothing skin tone are all standard.
I also love to really make an image pop with things like enhancing the sky and clouds and making everyone look their best. Wish you were 10 pounds lighter? Done!
I truly believe my love for my profession shows in every image. What do you think?
So often we hear from clients that put off updating their family portrait session that they would really love to be 10 pounds lighter before they book a session. Life is short and there are no promised tomorrows so I say do that portrait NOW! Let Blissful Images use our knowledge and expertise to pose and light you in the most flattering way. We can also do a little magic on your images if you request it and help you look 10 pounds lighter.
Your children will forever cherish a family portrait so be sure to book your session today.
Fall is the perfect time with the beautiful colors and falling leaves, to book your family portrait.
This is by far my favorite client story because it's so fun and wild and makes me smile every time I read it and imagine her so frustrated she locks the boys out of the house until she can cool off. It's from way back in 2007 but I love reading it.
Hope you will get a laugh out of this too!
"I wanted to share my experience with Jenni at Blissful Images. Over 8 years ago, I swore off pictures of my three boys. Every year from the time they were born, I had professional pictures of them. It was always a hassle and I always had to settle for the best of the worst picture. The last time I had pictures taken, I left the studio so mad at my boys for not cooperating that I locked them out of the house and said "Never again".
I never had the family portrait and always wanted one so I decided after an 8 year absence it was time. I called Jenni and she assured me things would go well. She came to our house and proceeded to take the most beautiful pictures even including our dog who I thought would never sit still. She took family shots, shots of the boys and individual shots of each of my guys. I was shocked at how at ease she had all of us and was truly amazed at how she handled each of my boys. They are not fond of pictures but the experience was so great we had Jenni back in the fall for more shots. It was the first time I actually had to pick from beautiful proofs instead of the best of the worst."
Sincerely, Jan Howland
The type of session I am shooting determines what I will bring. My most popular sessions are for families so I will give you an idea.
I bring some portable chairs and stools for posing. If it's indoors I bring backgrounds and professional lighting too. If there are small children I like to bring some things to engage them like feathers for tickling. They seem to love that! I make sure to have reviewed your 'Portrait Session Booking Form' so I know names and good info about all of you. I like to be as prepared as possible for your session!
I occasionally bring candy and/or treats to a session for the little ones because a little bribery can win a LOT of smiles!
For a child session I will bring more chairs and props and for newborns I bring all types of baskets and things to put them in as well as hats, diaper covers, ect. I love to work with my clients for a custom look. If dad is a painter, perhaps we will have a newborn session with paint cans and brushes.
The more original and creative my families are with ideas the better their session will be. Session planning with your photographer makes it so much more fun!
A year or so ago I was posting client images online for them to pick and order. I had several clients tell me they wanted to have my advice and help when ordering their images so I began doing in person order appointments. It has been SO fun! I show a slideshow set to music with all images and then we go through all the original 5x7 prints. Most people sort them into a 'yes' 'no' and 'maybe' pile. From there we decide on wall art images and sizing and then gift portraits for friends and family.
My clients have really been happy to have me there to share input on favorite images and what sizes are the best fit for their space. It's so much easier when I can show you what a 20x24 looks like on your wall than trying to imagine it. Also, it's hard to know everything I can offer you without getting together to talk. One family really wanted some greenery filled in to hide an object in the background and I was able to give them some ideas of what I could do.
This approach has made it so much easier for my clients to pick what they want and get their order exactly what they imagined. I love to help with every step of the process and it's what makes Blissful Images different from other photographers. We love to offer the full service experience!
Once we have the order I can come back with frames to pick the perfect one for your decor and then I take your print to the framer and deliver it back to you ready to hang!
I have tried a blog many times and never kept up so this time I am committing to doing 1 new post every week. This will be a blend of business and personal and I hope you enjoy it!
We have been spending a lot of time in Iowa recently as my Grandpa Denton started hospice on June 20th. My Grandpa is an amazing man. He has always made sure I knew I was loved and made me feel special (because I am is what he told me when I was talking to him recently)
My grandparents attended all my band and choir concerts and were always there for me with notes of encouragement. My grandma passed away 4 years ago at the age of 86. Grandpa is now 86 and his goal was to be the same age as grandma when he passes away. I know he has missed her so badly and although I am going to miss him so much I am glad he will no longer be in pain and will be with grandma again.
Here is the picture I took of them for their 60th anniversary. My grandpa has this portrait next to his bed right now and I have a beautiful 16x20 canvas hanging in my home.
